Giving up the Ghost
Apr. 22nd, 2002 02:39 pmMore comics cleaning. I don't know why I feel like I should babble about them, but heh, anyway, that's what this journal is basically for. Extra headspace.
So the next series-that-I-used-to-like to fall is Dark Minds.
I remember the first time I saw an issue (#3), I thought Wow. Because yeah, wow, it was different. And like almost all the stuff that's getting weeded out, I can still feel some of the old appeal in them. Some very yummy covers with all the fun cyborg girl imagery, circuits, mechanical cut away and the like. The art seems to be very clearly anime spawned, no, not manga, anime. It could almost be made from screen shots of a Ghost in the Shell clone. Unfortunately, that's not always a good thing either. At times the dialogue reads like really bad dubbing, with chunks of exposition crammed awkwardly into the monologue. And the art doesn't hold up either, despite the occasional pretty covers, entire issues can go by without a single page that's worth pausing over.
Also, there are way too many breast focused panels. And with little reason, the main female character is no Red Monica. Badly drawn plug gratuitous breast shots equals 'Eh.'.
And then there's the pointless inclusion of this biker gang, pointless armor suits, pointless technobabble. And yeah.
So g'bye Dark Minds, we'll see later how Warlands (the same studios Lodoss War clone) fares.
