Hmmm. My reaction to Reign of Fire was somewhere in between. Because it had tanks, dragons and yes - half naked men, but also some really stupid, stupid plot holes. Heh, there was enough good that I'm seriously tempted to write fanfic for it. And call the story something like... "Wrong and wrong again". Because...

1. A species that (as Genn said) starts with one male makes no sense. Were there females in that cave, or elsewhere, waiting to be woken up? Also, Quinn dug the egg out of that one female and I wanted there to be a point to that.

2. How do they hibernate and what releases them? I thought that baby!Quinn might have dropped his lighter in the cave, but is the dragon really that flammable? And it woke up right away. It'd make more sense if it was more of a global change that was waking them up, like it's part of the freeze/fry cycle that we don't know about. Rising temperatures wake the dragons who raze everything and heralds the next ice age or something.

3. The dragons eat ash? That's just.... bizarre. You'd expect to see them out licking the ground after they'd burned it and ash isn't very good for a balanced diet. Yes, it does explain why they like to burn everything, but there should be more to it than that.

4. What are people and society like now? It looked like there were very people over even 40 and if Quinn is late 20s to mid 30s then we can place all the rest of them as the dragons spread. And apparently they multiplied fast, spreading from the UK outward. I liked the bit with them reenacting Star Wars and I wanted to see more of that sense of disconnection, that society has been put together from the bits and pieces that people remember. I'm imagining that maybe the US soldiers were raised in undersea bunkers where they were taught to be all sharp and soldiery and then reseeded around the world.

5. Dragon slayers? Ha! More like tasty bits. Their original catching method stunk.. Why had it ever worked before? No where else on earth has clouds?

6. I'm trying to pinpoint why the female character (and why is there almost always only *one* of them who is important) annoyed me. Partially because the ending becomes totally obvious once she and Quinn start locking gazes. Also partially because she's a token and thus meant to be adored by all. She's basically the Americans' mascot.
And I must admit that the queer side of me is scuffing her feet and saying that really the romance was all about the Quinn/Creedy (or Quinn/Van Zan if you like alpha dogs).

That's it for now. Still pondering.
