or how Smallville is scarily like Roswell. And should be more like Buffy.

Starting superficially. Alien likes girl. Girl might like Alien but she has a regular Boyfriend. Boyfriend is a bit of a bastard and a jock. Strange circumstances keep drawing Girl and Alien together because they are Meant to Be.

Girl is dark haired, faintly exotic and has shiny lips. Boy is dark haired, faintly exotic and has shiny lips.

Sound familiar?

A little too familiar if you ask me.
I've watched 3 (plus a tiny bit of the 4th) episodes of Smallville so far and despite my pervasive love of the superhero genre (which live action versions of Superman have always been a part of), I'm starting to get disappointed. Which is sad frankly (and Shirley), because it has a lot going for it. The whole Superman thing, solid and compelling mythos. The actors, not bad (for freshly minted teen icons in the making, with nice back up adults). The stories, infinite possibilities. Good shows have sprung from such a stew.
The result for Smallville? It comes up short.
Each episode seems to revolve around a new kryptonite-mutated person. Many of whom are stalking Lana for no other reason then her perfection. Clark included. So, okay, why? There's this whole cool idea of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor being friends that is completely being wasted. Even the Superman parts aren't being dwelled on like they could. The obvious paths are taken without the sly glimpses into the reality of the experience that other shows have offered.

And no fucking way is Clark 14.

And I'm not sure that I'm currently articulate enough to dissect it further, but the gist is there. Now if only one could steal Joss Weadon's brain for a day or two...
